Comcel is aleading operator of the cellular telephony market in Colombia.

Comcel started its operations in Bogotá on July 1 1994 as a joint company, with the participation of Bell Canada International (BCI), the ETB and Telecom. For its part, the West and Caribbean Cellular SA (Occel) began operations in September 1994 and was also founded as a company, involving, among others, Cable & Wireless Plc, Antioquia Celular SA, Caribbean Cellular SA Coffee Company and Cellular SA.

From the time that the tender was awarded, Comcel received help from 30 Canadian experts, in order to train Comcel's staff in all aspects of Colombia needed to offer a service of excellent quality. Comcel alsp installed a digital network capacity at 100%, using the latest technology in the world. Which, from the start, allowed communications with the utmost clarity and fidelity.

On March 26, 1998, BCI purchased a 68.4% stake in Occel. In this operation BCI gained control of the shares of Cable & Wireless Plc, Caribbean Cellular SA, Celular SA Coffee Company and some minority investors.
