BOGOTA (Dow Jones) -The Colombian economy likely expanded around 4% in the first quarter of the year while unemployment has stopped growing and long-term inflation is subdued, President Alvaro Uribe said Thursday.

Uribe said "everything indicates that the economy grew 4% in the first quarter," according to an official statement.

The Colombian economy expanded 2.5% in the last quarter of 2009. The central bank estimates that the economy will grow 3% this year after posting a 0.4% increase for all of 2009.

Uribe said that a recent increase in unemployment had ended and that "low inflation appears to be forecast for the long term."

The central bank expects inflation for 2010 to come in between 2% and 4%.
