Colombian News - Night Clubs
Sunday, 19 October 2008 01:56

There are a ton of dance clubs here in Medellin! More than enough to keep you busy for a few months. We'll try to give you the low down on some of the best.

Parque Yerras zone in el poblado: nice place to take a date, chill, sit down and have a beer...

La Republica - plays reggaeton and typical Colombian music, decent place to meet people on Fridays and Saturdays, cover, but inexpensive.

San Pues - good, less expensive place for the more humble crowd, worth a look, cover cheap.

Deck - tiny place that plays some great techno and house music, packed, good friendly atmosphere, cover about $3.

Folia - another personal fav, good place to party and meet people on a Saturday (but it's hit or miss though depending on the night), cover inexpensive.

Blue - the Thursday night place, plays American classic rock, many foreigners, gradually turning into an American style meat market, cover inexpensive.

Blounge - karaoke place, the Wednesday night hangout, other nights it's kinda dead.

Deja Vu - good on Thursdays and Sundays, ladies' night on Thursdays, one of the only places in town that plays hip hop, cover cheap, close to metro stop Industriales.

Place across from Deja Vu, (can't remember name). On Thursdays they have live bands and a good scene, cover cheap.

Las Palmas zone - street filled with a few clubs, on ridge of city with nice views.

Circus - nice place with various music, good place to introduce yourself to a group of people, friendly atmosphere, hot girls, no cover most nights, sometimes they don't let groups of only guys in...this is THE after hours spot in this zone of the city.

La Casa - great atmosphere, best on Thursdays, techno music, hot women, good place to meet people 3-5$ cover.

Babylon - just kind of an average place, lots of groups of friends go there to sit down, other options better.

Pub Rock - punk rock type small club and one of the only sausage fests in town.

Palmitas - cool place, lively, older crowd, in the back they have an open air bar with one of best views in city, nice place to take a date, more expensive.

La Autopista - This is the zone of the biggest clubs in Medellin, and they are huge, but not necessarily the best.

Mangos - the number one club in Medellin (according to the locals). If you ask a local where you should go out, they all will tell you this place, a definite one timer, gotta check it out, great decorations, expensive, $10-15 cover, drinks expensive. It's the high rollers place. You will see lots of chains and plastic tits. I'm just being honest here...but not the best spot to meet people. Best days to go are when the local universities have "integraciones" or parties there on a Wednesday or Thursday every now and then. Best way to find out about them is take some classes at the University of Medellin or have some friends in some of the universities. These are not easy to find out about...

Palmahia - gigantic club that opened with a bang last year but hasn't been heard much of since. Same expensive style as Mangos. Kind of reminds you of those hokey middle school dances you had in your school gym. Not a must see.
Universal - kind of a couples place, not good to meet people, expensive, but sometimes on Fridays they have "barra libre" open bar for a cover of $8.

Electra - Techno place, big, close to Mangos, good atmosphere.

Feathers (locals call it Plumas) - gay club, but cool, light-hearted atmosphere and always a good place to meet women.
What? I'm serious. There's always a few women in there hanging out with their gay friends. I was in there last night.
Why - in the south of the city on the autopista, techno place. It is the after-hours place of the city...open until 6am.

Other cool zones to go out:

La Calle (street) 33 - It's mainly got many chill bars one after another, but a cool place to chill and have a beer, cheap.

La 70 - starts at metro stop Estadio. It has some of the most authentic salsa bars in town, neat atmosphere, many little bars next to each other, cheap.

Sabaneta - La doctora, a bunch of nightclubs on the top of this hill in the neighborhood Sabaneta. The best one is Canelon. Good, lively atmosphere and possible to meet people.

Envigado - One street over from the main plaza there are five or six little bar/clubs that are laid back and provide possibilities of encounters.

A couple other favorites-

Lobby - near the San Diego mall, pure techno music. There are other better options. Though it's okay, it's not a must.

Dona Clarita -The locals will tell you it's not safe, but we had fun and it's a good place to meet people...it's near La Universidad de Antioquia, we think, and cheap.

Vinacure - wacky club with a trippy interior design with a gay rainbow colored streak to it, but worth a visit. Cool, good place to meet people, but look out for girls named Veronica. (Don't ask!) Outside of city in town called Caldas, like a $12 cab ride.
